Sandwich*
*Or how I made my snack while questioning the manual skills of the French and attempting to regain some personal pride

A film by Benjamin Carle, Neels Castillon, and Félix Seger
Based on an original idea by Benjamin Carle

We no longer know how to do anything by ourselves. The observation is undeniable.

In a totally globalized and specialized society, we hardly use
our hands anymore. Current society provides access to “ready-to-consume” in all areas, yet the Do It Yourself trend has never been stronger and in fields as diverse as DIY, cooking, knitting, furniture, food…

Are the numerous Do It Yourself initiatives a reaction
to the consumer world that has distanced us from manufacturing?
To a world of work that no longer keeps all its promises?
To a specialization of society that pushes us all to become
“single-task”? Or an answer to this question, which everyone
has already asked themselves: “And if there’s a catastrophe tomorrow, can
I cope? What can I do by myself?” BEN

To materialize this desire to create things oneself, to stimulate one’s
manual skills, the sandwich emerged as a particularly suitable subject.
It is a double symbol: that of
consumption, as the French eat more than 2 billion per year, and that of the loss of savoir-faire.

Because when we “make” a sandwich, we are actually just
assembling different ingredients bought in stores.
We do not consider that beforehand, it was necessary to dig, sow, screw,
fix, plant, press, knead, shape, laminate, fish, gut, preserve,
prune, stake, raise, pick, assemble, and even brew.
