Le CastelaS

Castelas olive grove

Our adventure in the Vallée des Baux de Provence began with this magnificent grove of six hectares (about 15 acres) in a single plot. Well situated on the south-facing slopes of Les Alpilles, it is the lieu-dit Castelas, in the municipality of Mouriès, very near the village.

It dates back a long way. For many years it belonged to the same family, and writings from 1770 describe it as it is today. Contemplated by successive generations who tended its trees, the grove embodies the memory of their history. And today, we are its stewards.

The Salonenque olive, an emblematic variety in the Vallée des Baux de Provence, dominates this grove, where the Verdale and Grossane varieties are also planted. These are imposing, majestic trees grown back after the 1956 freeze. The grove has since been extended by land acquired from our delightful neighbours.
